Today was the day that the long expected Ipad became a reality.
I learned to wait a little bit and no to get too excited on events like this, after I waited anxiously the Google Nexus One, just to find that it was nothing out of this world.
So far, I’ve only seen the promotional video and a few comments from a bunch of blogs and Twitter so I admit my opinion is still very limited.
At first glance it is obvious that it’s an amazing piece of art and technology, the device looks beautiful and it has a great design.
Overall, from my personal stand point, the Ipad it’s like a big Iphone and I’m still not very well convinced why I should spend more money on another device that provides similar features to my Iphone. True, the device is very cool and photos, videos and such look very impressive, but nothing I can’t live without.
What I like about the Iphone, it’s the portability and the freedom of having Internet connectivity, my files and apps with me, all into one single device that happens to be also a cell phone.
I don’t imagine myself carrying the Ipad with me everywhere I go, and more if I’m already carrying the Iphone. Why should I use both at the same time? For me it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Also, the Ipad is not a laptop and I need to sync it to a Mac or PC, so I can’t get rid of my current laptop.
But I think that truthfully, the real groundbreaking achievement from Apple today is not the device but the iBooks store. This store has opened a new distribution channel for content producers, that before, it was only available to musicians and programmers. Since literally anyone can prodice content, it means that mortals like me, can aspire to write an ebook and sell it there as well.
I hope that Apple don’t make the mistake of making the ibooks Store available only to Ipad users. I believe that the iBooks Store should also be at reach to the millions of Iphone and Ipod touch users.
The money is in the iBooks Store, not in the Ipad
